When the Metro Bus Garage in Brentwood, Missouri needed to modernize its aging heating system, facility ownership and mechanical contractor American Boiler turned to Behrmann — and to Lochinvar — for a reliable, high-efficiency solution. The result was a seamless boiler replacement that is now delivering measurable energy savings and setting the stage for further system expansion.

A deeper Dive

The bus garage’s existing boiler system had reached the end of its useful life. The older units were less efficient and no longer meeting the facility’s heating demands in a cost-effective way. The goal was straightforward but consequential: replace the aging equipment with modern, high-efficiency condensing boilers that would reduce energy consumption and provide dependable heat for the building going forward.

Behrmann supplied two Lochinvar FTX 850 condensing boilers, paired with a complete hydronic package including Taco boiler pumps, Taco FI-Series base-mounted system pumps, an expansion tank, and an air separator — with fittings and accessories sourced from Twin City Hose, Wise Gauges, and Keckley. The system was engineered to deliver a significant efficiency upgrade over the previous installation while fitting within the existing mechanical room footprint.

Transitioning to high-efficiency condensing boilers required an upgrade to a Category IV flue system — a step up from the venting used by the older equipment. Fortunately, high-efficiency boilers typically use smaller flue diameters, which allowed American Boiler to run the new venting along the same path as the original flue. This saved valuable space in the mechanical room and kept the installation clean and practical. Worth noting: the bus garage is currently working with American Boiler to scope an additional three boilers, so the system has been designed with future expansion in mind.

The owner had previously operated Lochinvar equipment and, given their positive experience with the brand, wanted to stay with it for the replacement.
